Superstar Usher and pregnant fiancee Tameka Foster, set to swap vows on Saturday (July 28th) in the Hamptons, called off the wedding. A statement released Saturday morning by Usher press rep Patti Webster read: "It was announced today that the wedding ceremony for Usher Raymond IV and Tameka Foster was canceled. No additional information will be given regarding the circumstances of the cancellation, but we hope the privacy of this matter will be respected." There is no word on whether Usher and Foster remain a couple, though the two are expecting a baby this fall.
The private ceremony was supposed to have taken place between the 28-year-old singer and the 36-year-old divorcee at record executive L.A. Reid's home in the upscale New York suburb in front of about 100 people, with crooner Robin Thicke rumored to be a performer at the reception.
EURweb.com reported that several blogs and tabloids have alleged that Foster has a history of arrests, which Usher knew nothing about. In an interview credited to the National Enquirer, Foster's older half sister Valencia claimed that at 14, Tameka's first lover was a married ex-con who died in a drug-related shooting.
The cancellation of Usher's nuptials comes after months of rumor, speculation, and denials from the "Confessions" singer himself. Usher's mother Jonetta Patton was rumored to be less than happy with the match, and it was reported that both she and Usher's godfather, Tony winner Ben Vereen, were removed from the guest list because of their objections to the marriage.
In May, Usher fired his mother from her post as manager, a role she'd played throughout her son's multi-platinum career. The move came amid rumors that Foster, his former fashion stylist, wanted to take on management duties.
Criticism from fans and within the industry got so thick that two weeks ago Usher -- who had fired his longtime publicist -- sent an open letter to People magazine to address the rumors surrounding his relationship with the older Foster, who has three children from her previous marriage to Ryan Glover. The statement read in part: "I am happy, excited, completely clear and independent on my direction, feelings, decisions and I am NOT BEING LED."
