Guitarist Joyce Cooling's latest album, Revolving Door, is a showcase for her songwriting skills and guitar chops. She says that in writing tunes, she and partner Jay Wagner either jam together until they find a melody, or get inspired by a good groove first. She adds that she's still deeply attracted to the musical styles of Brazil, which meld awesome rhythms with unique melodies.
She said: "I went through a whole Brazilian phase that I'm certainly not over, where what I loved about Brazilian music was that groove thing. It had that African groove but then it has all that lush European harmony with it. So it was this beautiful melding of groove and harmony. And of course when you've got harmony that's modulating and going these great places, your melodies can then go to much more interesting places."
Revolving Door is also a testament to Cooling's dedication to the cause of dispelling myths about mental illness. A portion of the proceeds from the album are being donated to the National Alliance On Mental Illness.
Her leadoff single, "Mildred's Attraction," is being followed at radio by the up-tempo tune, "At The Modern."
