Science Fair to Save the World’s Environment Contest
OFFICIAL CONTEST RULES
NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. A PURCHASE WILL NOT INCREASE YOUR CHANCE OF WINNING. VOID WHERE PROHIBITED.
1. HOW TO ENTER
a. The Smooth Jazz V98.7 (WVMV-FM) and Cranbrook Institute of Science “Project Earth Science Fair to Save the World’s Environment” contest (“The Contest”)will begin on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at approximately 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time (“ET”) and end on Saturday, May 10, 2008, at approximately 6:00 p.m. ET. (“Contest Dates”)
b. To participate in the Contest, beginning Tuesday, April 1, 2008, log on to www.smoothjazzdetroit.com, KEYWORD: Earth. Download and complete the official Application Packet including Application Form with your legal first and last name, gender, complete address, city, state, zip code, home telephone number, email address, school name and district, grade, school address, title and category of project, project sponsor, sponsor email, starting date of research and location of lab work. All questions on the Summary Form must be completed, including: Title of project, Problem or Question project investigates; hypothesis; method or procedure; internet access; power and bibliography. All questions on Required Safety Checklist and Risk Assessment Form must be completed. The Photo Release Form must also be signed by a parent or guardian. Only one (1) internet entry per person and one (1) internet entry per email address is permitted. Internet entries will be deemed made by the authorized account holder of the email address submitted at the time of entry. The authorized account holder is the natural person who is assigned to the email address by an internet access provider, online service provider or other organization that is responsible by assigning email address or the domain associated with the submitted email address. Multiple participants are not permitted to share the same email address. All entries submitted become the sole property of WVMV-FM and will not be acknowledged or returned. Use of any device to automate entry is prohibited. Proof of submission of an entry shall not be seemed proof receipt by WVMV-FM. WVMV-FM’s computer is the official time keeping device for this Contest
The following request for marketing information will also be included on the Application form and is optional for registration into Contest:

- Do you wish to receive additional marketing materials from Cranbrook Institute of Science?
c. Application packets may be submited via email to maureen.barkume@cbsradio.com or mailed to Smooth Jazz V98.7, 31555 W. Fourteen Mile Road, Suite 102, Farmington Hills, MI 48334 by the deadline date.
d. Each Contest Application Packet must be the original and creative work of each contestant and must not contain copyrighted materials or any other materials that may be restricted, prohibited or outlawed by federal, state or local laws. WVMV-FM has the absolute discretion to disqualify any Application based on its sole judgment. WVMV-FM, in its sole discretion, reserves the right to disqualify any Application if such Application contains illegal, indecent or otherwise offensive material, or if such Application contains material whose content is deemed at the sole discretion of WVMV-FM to be unsuitable for the public (i.e. Applications must be radio clean). Applications that do not comply with these rules will not be eligible for the contest. All Applications become the property of WVMV-FM and will not be acknowledged or returned.
e. Applications must be received by 12:00 Midnight ET on Sunday, April 20, 2008 or postmarked no later than April 20, 2008.
f. WVMV-FM is not responsible for Applications not received due to difficulty accessing the Internet, service outages or delays, computer difficulties or other technological glitches. WVMV-FM is also not responsible for lost, stolen, mutilated, mis-delivered, postage due, illegible or untimely entries.
2. ELIGIBILITY RESTRICTIONS
a. The Contest is open to all persons who are currently enrolled in the 2007-2008 school year in grades nine through twelve at the time of Application. Students attending any public, parochial, private school or home study in Wayne, Oakland or Macomb counties are eligible. Students holding a high school diploma or who are 21 years of age or older are not eligible. No group research projects are eligible. Students must be legal United States residents living in Michigan in the Metro Detroit area. Employees of WVMV-FM, Cranbrook Institute of Science, its licensee, its corporate parents, subsidiaries, and affiliates, its advertising agencies, participating sponsors/promotional partners, other radio stations in the Detroit metropolitan area and the members of their immediate families and/or households are ineligible to participate or win. Students of Cranbrook Kingswood Schools are not eligible. Subject to all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
b. Only one (1) winner per household is permitted in any WVMV-FM contest every thirty (30) days, or every six (6) months for prizes over $600 in value.
c. Winners may have to present valid government-issued photo-identification and sign a release form from WVMV-FM in order to receive prize.
d. Contestants are required to provide truthful information and WVMV-FM will reject and delete any Application it discovers to be false or fraudulent. WVMV-FM will disqualify any Application from individuals who do not meet the eligibility requirements, and WVMV-FM will also delete any Application received from persons under the age of 13 in compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.
3. PRIZES
a. Three (3) Prizes will be awarded. One (1) student presenting the winning science fair project will receive $5,000 and (2) students presenting the honorable mention science fair projects will each receive $2,500. A total of $10,000 in prizes will be awarded. The top three (3) science fair projects will be determined at the Project Earth Science Fair event on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at the Cranbrook Institute of Science, located on the Cranbrook Education Community, 39221 Woodward Avenue, Bloomfield, MI 48304 between approximately Noon – 4 p.m.
b. Prize may be claimed at WVMV-FM, 31555 W. Fourteen Mile, Suite 102, Farmington Hills, MI 48334 during normal business hours, Monday- Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. ET within 30 days of winner announcements. Winners will forfeit any prize not claimed by June 30, 2008. In the event that a prize or prize certificate is mailed to a Winner, it will be with the prior written consent of the Winner and therefore, Winner assumes the risk of its loss. WVMV-FM is not responsible for the safe arrival of a prize or prize certificate.
c. There is no substitution, transfer, or cash equivalent for prize, except that Sponsor may, at its sole discretion, substitute prize of comparable value. The prize is expressly limited to the items listed above and does not include taxes or any other expenses. Other restrictions may apply.
4. WINNER SELECTION AND NOTIFICATION
a. Decisions of WVMV-FM management with respect to the Contest are final.
b. Up to the top twenty-five (25) eligible applications based on the following criteria: project relevance to the Science Fair theme Saving the World’s Environment and thoroughness of Application will be selected by a panel of judges to present their projects at the Event. Qualifiers will be contacted by phone and/or email on or about April 21, 2008. Qualifiers name and project titles may be announced on Smooth Jazz V98.7 and listed on the Smooth Jazz V98.7 web site. If qualifier is unable to attend the Event another qualifier may be selected based on the criteria outlined above from the remaining Applications. Qualifiers must adhere to all limitations and requirements provided in the official Application Packet in developing and presenting the final science fair project. Project construction and research should not begin no sooner than April 21, 2008.
c. One (1) grand prize winner and (2) honorable mention projects will be determined by a panel of judges which will examine and score each project and interview each qualifier based on the following criteria: Creative Ability (30%); Scientific Thought/Engineering Goals (30%); Thoroughness (15%); Skill (15%) and Clarity (10%). The three (3) winners will be determined and announced at the Event Saturday, May 10th at approximately 1:00 p.m. Projects that are not true experiments are very unlikely to place or win.
d. Odds of winning depend in part upon the number of eligible Applications received.
e. Qualifiers and/or winners need not listen to win.
f. Winners will be contacted by emailand/or phonewithin twenty-four (24) hours following the selection of Winner. If Winners cannot be reached within two (2) days of notification attempt, an alternate winner maybe selected by the Smooth Jazz V98.7 committee based on the criteria outlined in 4c. Winners must execute and return any required Affidavit of Eligibility and/or Release of Liability Prize Acceptance Form within five (5) days of notification attempt or prize will be forfeited and an alternate winner may be chosen by the Smooth Jazz V98.7 committee.
5. CONDITIONS
a. Payments of all federal, state and local taxes are solely the responsibility of the Winners. Winners may be required to sign an IRS Form W-9 or the equivalent.
b. By participating in the Contest, Winners and their guests, agree to have their Applications, names, voices, or likenesses used in any advertising or broadcasting material relating to this Contest without additional financial or other compensation, and, where legal, to sign a publicity release confirming such consent prior to acceptance of the prize.
c. Prior to awarding any prize or prize certificate, WVMV-FM in its sole discretion may require Contest Winners and his or her guest if applicable, to sign a liability release prior to acceptance of prize or use of their Nomination, agreeing to hold WVMV-FM, its corporate licensee, its parent, subsidiary and affiliated corporations, and the officers, shareholders, directors, employees, agents and representatives of each of them harmless against any and all claims or liability arising directly or indirectly from the prize or participation in the Contest.
d. By participation in this Contest, all Winners agree to fully transfer all right, title and interest to the submitted Applications to Sponsor without compensation (including but not limited to publicity rights and copyrights). No royalties, copyright fees, license fees, talent fees, or any other compensation will be paid for any reason relating to any aspect or part the submitted Nomination, even if reproduced, distributed, and/or sold by Sponsor. Sponsor shall have the right to use any aspect or part of the submitted Nomination, including Winners name, likeness and image, for any commercial or marketing purposes without additional compensation, in perpetuity. Notwithstanding the foregoing, nothing herein requires that Sponsor use the winning Nomination.
e. WVMV-FM, in its sole discretion, reserves the right to disqualify any person tampering with the Application process, the operation of the WVMV-FM web site or who is otherwise in violation of the rules. It further reserves the right to cancel, terminate or modify the Contest if it is not capable of completion as planned, tampering, unauthorized intervention or technical failures of any sort. All Internet participants agree to be bound by these rules, and the Official Rules appearing above.
f. WVMV-FM reserves the right to make changes in the rules of the Contest, including the substitution of a prize of equivalent value, which will become effective upon announcement.
g. Failure to comply with the Contest rules may result in a contestant’s disqualification solely at the discretion of WVMV-FM.
h. WVMV-FM is not responsible for typographical or other errors in the printing, the offering or the administration of the Contest, or in the announcement of a prize.
i. Copies of the written Contest rules and a list of the Winners (when complete) are available during regular business hours at the main studio of Smooth Jazz V98.7 WVMV-FM, 31555 W. 14 Mile Road, Suite 102, Farmington Hills, MI 48334.
