Will Smith Proud Of Level Of Care In Making 'I Am Legend'

Will SmithWill Smith's new movie I Am Legend brought in more than $76 million in its first weekend of release, making it the actor's seventh straight film to debut at Number One. In the film, Smith plays Robert Neville, possibly the last remaining man in the world after a manmade virus turns the population into mutated carnivorous beings. Neville spends the film searching for other survivors while at the same time trying to stay alive.

Smith told us the level of care the filmmakers took when making I Am Legend is what sets it apart from other movies in the genre: "You generally don't see science fiction movies with this level of care. Right? It's usually, it's a science fiction movie, you put the stuff in there. It's cool, you add some special effects and you move on. But just the level of care and concern that was taken to the character and to the idea and to really search for the reality of the situation."

Industry experts had predicted a $40 million opening weekend for I Am Legend. Despite harsh weather in most of the country, the film's weekend tally makes it the highest opening weekend for a December release in movie history.
