Singer Will Downing is looking forward to the release of his new CD, After Tonight, on October 30th. The project was recorded from what Downing terms his "black chair," due to the debilitating effects of the muscle disorder polymyocitis. But Downing, who collaborated on the project with producer Rex Rideout, says the CD is one of his greatest achievements.
Fans are already responding to sample of the CD's lead-off track, "Will's Groove." Rideout, who has worked on 10 CDs with Downing, says the track evolved from a phone call. "Will and I were on the phone one evening, and he asked me if I thought I could put music to this groove he came up with, and then he proceeded to just riff for a few minutes and what evolved, organically, was 'Will's Groove,'" says Rideout. "I think 'Will's Groove' kinda represents what Will's fans have always loved about his particular sound in the first place. His voice clearly is his instrument."
Due to his ongoing physical therapy, Downing has to cancel his appearance on this week's Capital Jazz SuperCruise from Baltimore. However, the singer plans to resume his concert touring schedule in 2008 as his health continues to improve.
