Writer, director, actor, and producer Tyler Perry is rumored to have a role in the upcoming Star Trek film due later this year. If true, this would be the first time that Perry has starred in a film he didn't write. Director J.J. Abrams, the man behind the upcoming film Cloverfield, as well as episodes of TV's Lost and Alias, is helming the new big screen version that looks at the early lives of Captain James T. Kirk and Spock.
The online movie blog UGO broke the news that Perry plays the head of Starfleet Academy, with scenes in which he oversees an academic hearing involving Kirk while he was still a cadet.
The film stars Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, and Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy. Also appearing are Winona Ryder, Eric Bana, and the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy. The film is due December 25th, 2008.
Perry's most recent box-office smash was last year's Why Did I Get Married? Other hits included 2007's Daddy's Little Girls, 2006's Madea's Family Reunion. His next directorial effort will be Meet The Browns, starring Angela Bassett, which is due to hit theaters this March.
