Spyro Gyra's latest CD, the Caribbean-oriented Good To Go-Go, is maintaining a presence on the Billboard Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart at Number 12. The veteran group has been successful by releasing a new CD every year and a half, and have developed a loyal following for its annual concerts.
Saxophonist Jay Beckenstein notes that the group is only able to consistently put out albums of all-new material because of the compositional skills of the group's five members. He told us: "You know, we've basically taken the route all through the years that any music that goes on the record has to be original music written for the record. There's been one or two cover tunes over the years but really, negligible. If, for example, this was all wrapped around me and I had to come up with ten new songs with different concepts for every year and a half maybe I'd be getting pretty dry. But it's five guys doing it."
Spyro Gyra is taking a brief break from their touring schedule. After a show in the Dominican Republic on September 9th, the group will resume its U.S. tour with a September 13th show at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia.
