Some Christian groups are up in arms over the religious message absorbed by children who view the new Nicole Kidman film, The Golden Compass, opening in theaters December 7th. The film is adapted from a book by author Philip Pullman, which is the first of a trilogy called His Dark Materials.
Kidman's co-star, Daniel Craig, says the morals in the book are solid and should allay any concerns by Catholics: "The book deals with really, very important things. One of the things that it deals with is that the misuse of power by any authority, whether it's a political or religious power, is wrong. And that's what the book deals with. It might be a bit against the Catholic Church but I know for a fact that the Catholic Church's got big enough shoulders to get this. It's interesting that people should get so angry about it because the morals in this book are solid and really good, and I don't have a problem with them."
Bill Donaghue, president and CEO of the Catholic League claims, "These books denigrate Christianity, thrash the Catholic Church and sell the virtues of atheism." However, New Line Cinema has attempted to remove the religious aspects of the story and focus instead on the travels of a little girl named Lyra through a parallel universe. A New Line spokesman said the film is "an entertaining fantasy about love, courage, responsibility and freedom."
