Singer, songwriter and guitarist Ray Parker Jr. is featured on Licence To Funk, the new album by Swedish trombonist Nils Landgren and his Funk Unit band. Due October 9th on the ACT Music label, the set explores the funk genre with covers of material by Fred Wesley and the Crusaders, as well as originals by Landgren and members of his band.
Parker worked with Landgren previously on a CD called Creole Love Call that also featured keyboardist Joe Sample. Released in late 2005, Parker spent some time on the road with the two musicians to promote it. In 2006, the "Ghost Busters" composer explained: "In fact, I just left Germany playing with Swedish artist Nils Landgren. He has a great CD, by the way. Joe is on it, I'm on it, and a bunch of other people. One of the drummers Raymond Webber from new Orleans, Joe's son Nicholas Sample is playing bass on it. And we just did a month's tour in Germany and Sweden and France and Switzerland to sellout crowds and it was wonderful, everybody just played different stuff. "
Parker released his solo project, I'm Free, last summer. The CD featured the smooth jazz single "Mismaloya Beach."
