JK Rowling's rare, hand-written, illustrated book, The Tales of Beedle the Bard, fetched a record $3.98 million during an auction held in London on December 13th. Only seven copies of Rowling's first work since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows were published and six were given to people closely connected with the Potter books.
The Tales of Beedle the Bard was bought by someone from the London dealer Hazlitt, Gooden and Fox for 40 times its expected price. It is the highest price ever achieved at auction for a modern literary manuscript.
The book, a collection of wizardry tales, was mentioned in the last Potter book as having been left to Harry's friend Hermione by the Hogwarts headmaster, Dumbledore.
All proceeds from the sale will go to The Children's Voice, a charity Rowling co-founded in 2005.
