The long, five-year road to the start of the R. Kelly child pornography trial has just been extended even further. Originally set to begin September 17th in Cook County Court in Chicago, the trial was postponed indefinitely on Tuesday (September 4th).
Judge Vincent Gaughan, who had set the September 17th date at an August hearing, decided to push back the trial because lead prosecutor, Shauna Boliker, who recently gave birth, was told by her doctor to take more time off. Boliker, the chief of Illinois' Cook County Sex Crimes Division, had previously gone right back to work after the births of her two other children.
No new trial date was set. The next hearing in the case has been set for next Monday (September 10th).
The 40-year-old Kelly faces child pornography charges for videotaping himself having sex with a girl who prosecutors say was as young as 13. If convicted, R. Kelly faces up to 15 years in prison.
