The offbeat and quirky do battle with the predictable and the mainstream at video stores this week. On the mainstream side of the ring there's Wild Hogs, Fracture, and Vacancy. The wackier side of the spectrum presents the non-linear Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theaters For DVD, the slow and brooding The Lookout, David Lynch's Inland Empire, and a super-duper, two-disc version of Taxi Driver.
Also on tap: a five-disc collection of films based on works by William Shakespeare, a special edition of Labyrinth, the original Halloween, the documentary God Grew Tired Of Us, and the 25th anniversary edition of Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal.
WILD HOGS is about a dentist, a lawyer, a plumber/aspiring writer, and a computer geek who shake up their dull lives by taking their motorcycles out on a road trip from Cincinnati to California. The "Wild Hogs" are played by John Travolta, Martin Lawrence, William H. Macy, and Tim Allen.
The Wild Hogs DVD has director's commentary, an alternate ending, outtakes, deleted scenes, and a "making of" featurette.
In this clip from Wild Hogs, Woody explains to the guys that there are no rules on their road trip: (John Travolta) "There are no rules on this trip, remember? We're just heading for the Pacific and there ain't no plan. Who knows where we're going to be?" (Tim Allen) "I know where we're gonna be. It's a GPS in my phone now, look at that thing." (Travolta) "Let me see that. It's cool. Look at that." (Allen) "What did you for?" (Travolta) "For the good of the trip. You don't need a GPS to discover America. You need a bike and you need the road."
FRACTURE stars The Notebook's Ryan Gosling as a hot-shot assistant district attorney matching wits against an especially clever murderer played by Anthony Hopkins.
The Fracture DVD has two alternate endings and deleted scenes.
In this clip from Fracture, prosecutor Willy Beachum explains discovery to Ted Crawford -- who decided to defend himself in his attempted murder case: (Ryan Gosling) "It's called discovery, alright? That's where the state is legally obligated to provide all the evidence to the defendant so you can prepare your defense." (Anthony Hopkins) "There's nothing in it Willy. You haven't actually discovered anything." (Gosling) "That's one point of view. Another might be that I've hit the mother lode." (Hopkins) "Oh have they found the gun?" (Gosling) "I don't need the gun to convict you."
