Saxophonists Najee and Candy Dulfer are both popular in the smooth jazz and R&B arenas, though they each have distinctive styles and approaches. Najee's new CD, Rising Sun, was released in August while Dulfer's Candy Store was released a month later, both on the Heads Up International label. The two sax stars also got to know each other while both were recording and touring with Prince.
Recently Najee praised Dulfer's new set for its unconventional mix of musical styles. He said: "I heard the new album, I love it. You know, I like artists that aren't afraid to go somewhere other than what's out there, you know. Unfortunately with me, a lot of stuff I hear, everybody's kinda in the same ... nobody's really ready to just get away from the blues mind of pentatonic scales. Let's put some changes in there. Or if we're gonna go straight groove, let's go there. And she did that. And I was like: OK."
Najee's Rising Sun features the smooth jazz single "Come What May." The album stands at Number Four on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Albums chart this week.
