Singer and songwriter Michael McDonald is preparing for the release of his new CD Soul Speak, a mix of favorite tunes form the '60s and '70s. In the meantime, the former Doobie Brothers vocalist says he was thrilled to perform a duet with soul icon Chaka Khan on her Grammy-nominated CD Funk This!
McDonald was handpicked by Khan for the recording, who chose his composition "You Belong To Me" for their session. Their version of the tune, which was a solo hit for both McDonald and co-writer Carly Simon, climbed the smooth jazz and urban adult charts recently.
McDonald explained: "I just did a project with Chaka Khan. She recorded a version of 'You Belong To Me, 'which was a song I wrote with Carly Simon a few years ago. Many years ago. She did a great version of it, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis produced the project. So I did some background vocals and sang with her on that."
"You Belong To Me" stands at Number 21 on the smooth jazz chart.
Meanwhile, McDonald's version of "Walk On By" is gaining airplay. It's the first single from Soul Speak. which is due in March.
