Grammy-winning producer and bassist Marcus Miller is in the position of having two projects to promote. The artist banded together with Stanley Clarke and Victor Wooten for the trio set Thunder under the moniker SMV, but he continues to work his solo release, Marcus, which made its U.S. debut in March.
Marcus features a couple of covers, including the smooth jazz hit "Free" featuring Corinne Bailey Rae, and a version of R&B star Robin Thicke's hit "Lost Without U."
Miller recently explained why he wanted to re-do the Thicke tune as an electric bass-led instrumental: "It's a real contemporary song, but to me it sounds like Jobim, it sounds like an old Brazilian song. It has the same chord movement as a lot of the jazz standards that we play from Brazil, like 'Girl From Ipanema' and that kind of stuff -- it has that same sound to it. And I wanted to show people there's really nothing new under the sun and I can connect anything I hear to the old jazz days or the old R&B days."
Miller is currently on a tour of Asia and Europe with SMV through the end of October.
He will play host to the first sailing of the Playboy Jazz Cruise, which sails from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on January 25th. Performers include Herbie Hancock, Roberta Gambarini, Dianne Reeves, Poncho Sanchez, Roy Hargrove, and many others.
