Despite the Writers Guild of America strike, late night television is returning to the airwaves. While it was announced on December 17th that The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Late Night with Conan O'Brien will return to NBC on January 2nd without writers, the Guild struck an independent deal with David Letterman's production company, Worldwide Pants, and will soon resume taping The Late Show with its full staff.
Of Leno and O'Brien's' return, Rick Ludwin, executive vice president of late night and primetime series for NBC, said, "Both Jay and Conan have supported their writers during the first two months of this WGA strike and will continue to support them. However, there are hundreds of people who will be able to return to work as a result of Jay's and Conan's decision."
It's unclear when exactly Letterman will return, but it could be as soon as this week.
Late night shows have been airing reruns since the strike began in November.
