Saxophone star Kenny G has started a new blog on his website, kennyg.com. The Rhythm & Romance artist has also created a place where fans can leave phone messages for him and, and other fans, to hear.
Kenny's first blog post is addressed to kids who want to begin playing. He says the best age to start is between 10 and 14, and he recommends the alto horn for beginners. He adds, "I always tell kids that are starting the sax to not get discouraged if they haven't got a good or beautiful sound, even after 4 to 5 years. It just takes time and patience and as long as they enjoy the instrument, that is the main thing."
Kenny recently launched his own line of professional and student saxophones, designed to his specifications. He explained some of the details that can affect the sound of a saxophone, from the boor -- or tube -- to the metal used,
Said Kenny: "Certain parameters make saxophones sound like this or like that. Well I have a saxophone I like the sound of, so we've got similar parameters to keep the tone in the ballpark. Then you've got the metal content, well what's the metal content these days? It could be part copper, part brass, nickel, all these kind of things. And the right combination also makes a difference in the saxophone. So there's a blend of lots of little things that make a saxophone sound really great or just OK."
