Comic and actor Katt Williams was taken to a South Carolina mental hospital for a psych evaluation over the weekend after exhibiting bizarre behavior. The actor was reportedly in Sumter, South Carolina, to visit family members.
According to WISTV.com, police were summoned to the Mt. Vernon Inn on November 14th after Williams, accompanied by another man, attempted to check into the motel wearing only a bathrobe and a towel around his head. The desk clerk, who did not recognize Williams, made the call when the comic could not produce ID and appeared to lose his composure and crouched in a corner. Police who responded did not charge Williams with any crime. He reportedly left the motel without checking in.
The funnyman reportedly showed up next at the nearby office of an attorney, complaining that police were trying to violate his rights. According to The Sumter Item Williams also discussed the hoax rumor that he had died in a plane crash, which circulated earlier this month
Attorney Garryl Deas left the office after this conversation, but when he returned an hour later, he said that Williams was waiting for him and that his demeanor had changed. The actor seemed "disoriented" and was "speaking gibberish," according to Deas, who also told the paper, "He just said that he doesn't trust anyone anymore" and that "he thought everyone has turned against him. He wasn't really coherent."
Williams' relatives were summoned to the office at that point to get him to accept treatment.
A probate judge issued the order to have Williams transported to Tuomey Regional Medical Center by officers for evaluation. He can be held for 72 hours, after which he must appear before a judge to determine whether hospitalization is necessary.
This is the latest in a string of bizarre incidents involving the funnyman that included walking out of his BET Hip-Hop Awards hosting gig, skipping out on his Conan O'Brien talk show appearance November 5th, then being arrested in New York the following day on drug and weapons charges stemming from a traffic stop earlier this month.
Williams recently released the stand-up comedy DVD It's Pimpin' Pimpin', and is booked to perform November 20th at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas.
