Saxophonist Jessy J is nearing the top of the smooth jazz radio singles chart at Number Two with her very first single, "Tequila Moon," from her Peak Records debut album of the same name. The twenty-something performer is thrilled by the acceptance she's gotten not only from fans but from fellow musicians in the smooth jazz genre.
Jessy's first album was produced by guitarist Paul Brown, who featured Jessy on several of his live performances, including the Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival in 2007.
The sax player, who received classical training on piano and flute as well, has also performed with pop acts and Broadway-style musical revues before transitioning into the contemporary jazz world. She has been a guest artist on the Smooth Jazz Cruise as well as on some dates on the current Guitars & Saxes tour.
Jessy says that after gigs where she got to play with the likes of Kirk Whalum, Boney James, and Gerald Albright, she has found a home with smooth jazz: "After that experience, like, they're my brothers now! So I really love smooth jazz for the audience. The music is also very expressive. When you're on stage you can move around, dance around, tell stories, it's fun. It's not -- like classical music you have to be really serious when you perform, you can't move around. So smooth jazz is a vein that lets me be myself."
Jessy J, who is Mexican-American, is currently on a tour of Mexico with pop singer Michael Bolton.
