Guitarist Jeff Golub is a veteran of several Guitars & Saxes tours over the years. This year, there's a bit of a twist because a keyboardist -- Jeff Lorber -- is a part of the tour lineup. With Lorber on board, Golub and fellow guitarist Peter White, and saxophonists Gerald Albright and special guest Jessy J have formed a more cohesive band unit that play together for the entire show.
Golub explains that while the show is dubbed Guitars & Saxes, he was happy to have Lorber along this year. He explained: "I'm a real Jeff Lorber fan, so having Jeff there playing is great. But it does make it different, in that I like to have the diversity of another instrument as the lead voice so that it's not always the guitar or sax voice, that it's a piano leading the band for a quarter of the set. I think that's great, I think it makes for a more interesting set."
Golub adds that the structure of the show, which used to include segments where each featured instrumentalist played their hits alone with a hired band, has been altered by Lorber's presence. He added: "What's a little different that we're doing this year is typically we would just come out and do our song and maybe sit in on somebody else's song, and there was a rhythm section that was hired, of sidemen we would kind of play with. But since Jeff is such a great keyboard player and everybody wanted him to play on everybody's (laughs) stuff all the time, that we ended up making it that it's just a band, that all of us are on stage most of the night."
Guitars & Saxes rolls into Cocoa Beach, Florida, this Friday, May 30th, to play the Space Coast Convention Center.
Golub's most recent CD is 2007's Grand Central.
