Janet Jackson enjoyed the process of shooting Tyler Perry's ensemble dramedy Why Did I Get Married?, which landed atop the weekend box office chart with a remarkable $21.5 million. While she relished playing psychologist Patricia under co-star Perry's direction, she says it was also difficult, because the twice-divorced Jackson said she found herself relating to the issues of another character in the film.
The character of Sheila, played by fellow Grammy winner Jill Scott, is an overweight woman with low self-esteem whose husband not only verbally abuses her, but also cheats on her with one of her friends. Surprisingly, Jackson said she was profoundly affected by the character's plight.
She explained: "I saw a great deal of myself in Sheila -- her self-esteem issues and how she blamed herself for it and the cheating and ... there was one other thing that she went through, and I said, 'Oh my God, this is reminding me so much of what I went through ... The name-calling from her husband. There were so many things about Sheila that were reminding me of my life."
Jackson is reportedly gearing up to record the follow-up to her poorly-received 2006 CD, 20 Y.O.
Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married? also stars Perry, Sharon Leal, Tasha Smith, Malik Yoba, Richard T. Jones, and Michael J'ai White.
