Herbie Hancock Live from Abbey Road

Herbie HancockBack in June Herbie Hancock was joined by Corrine Bailey Rae when they performed a rare live collaboration on the celebrated music series ‘Live From Abbey Road.’

Herbie Hancock performed selections from his Grammy award winning album ‘River: The Joni Letters’ during his episode, which aired as part of season two of the Sundance Channel’s acclaimed original series.

The series features a roster of thirty-six artists over the course of its second season and continues to air on Thursdays at 10:00PM. The Hancock episode, which also features Kate Nash and Rascal Flatts will be airing again on Thursday, September 18th.

During this captured live performance Corrine Bailey Rae joins the legendary jazz musician for their only live performance to date of the album’s title track “River.” Hancock also recruited talented young singer Sonya Kitchell, as well as the world-class musicians Wayne Shorter and Vinnie Colaiuta to accompany him for this session.

Critical praise has mounted for Herbie Hancock and for his ‘River of Possibilities’ tour which included a performance at the Playboy Jazz Fest and at Carnegie Hall as part of the JVC Jazz Fest. His latest album, a reinvention of Joni Mitchell songs, ‘River: The Joni Letters’ achieved two Grammy awards, including the prestigious Album of the Year, and the Jazz Journalists Association honored Hancock by naming him Artist of the Year.

The Orange County Register boasted about Hancock’s performance at the Playboy Jazz Festival, “Hancock coursed through funk, jazz and Joni Mitchell interpretations with an easy shifting stylistic focus that managed to both settle into deep grooves and hit heights of spontaneous invention.”
