Herbie Hancock, whose CD, River: The Joni Letters, won Album of the Year and Contemporary Jazz Album at the 50th anniversary Grammy Awards ceremony February 10th, says the wins were not only a victory for jazz, but a victory for Buddhists like himself. Hancock, along with musician pals Wayne Shorter, Carlos Santana, and album guest Tina Turner, have long practiced Buddhism.
Appearing at the recent NAACP Image Awards in Los Angeles, where River was crowned Outstanding Jazz Album, Hancock noted: "It was really an unbelievable moment for me and for jazz. And also, for all the Buddhists like me that were chanting hours and hours that I would get that award 'cause now they are really encouraged because they are working for world peace, you know, stuff that we need to have in order to protect our planet. Before we can protect our planet, we as human beings have to get together."
Hancock has not announced his next recording project as yet.
