Gerald Albright Includes Little Known Isaac Hayes Tune On 'Sax For Stax'

Gerald AlbrightSaxophonist and composer Gerald Albright's brand-new CD, Sax For Stax, is a tribute to the great artists and sounds of Memphis, including Grammy winner Isaac Hayes, who passed away August 10th at 65. Albright kicks off the new album with a little-known TV theme by Hayes.

Albright explains that "Theme From The Men" was composed by Hayes for a '70s TV show that barely lasted a season. He said that most of the tunes on Sax For Stax are well-known except for this one: "The opening tune, 'The Theme From The Men.' Isaac Hayes was commissioned to do the soundtrack for that particular show. And I've always just liked the soundtrack. That was the only reason why I put that on the record. It just felt good, I love the song, I loved the orchestral nature of it with the strings and the horns and the flute and everything. And so in lieu of doing an obvious tune like 'The Theme From Shaft,' I wanted to put a twist on things."

The current single from Sax For Stax is Albright's version of Eddie Floyd's "Knock On Wood."

Albright is currently performing solo dates and dates with Guitars & Saxes. His next date will be August 19th in Detroit at the Detroit Princess.
