Veteran contemporary jazz group Fourplay plans to head back into the studio in January to deliver a new CD in the first half of 2008. A statement on the group's website, fourplayjazz.com, reads, "We're anxiously awaiting our new album for 2008. We start back in the studio in January and will be on schedule for a June '08 release date! A new album brings a new look which we will be showcasing next year as well with another reconstruction of our website."
Fourplay members Bob James, Nathan East, Larry Carlton, and Harvey Mason have continued to maintain solo careers and outside projects along with their work together. Their habit has been to work on a Fourplay project every other year.
Keyboardist James said that Fourplay has tried to be a democracy, but sometimes the group just needs a leader: "In some ways that's a really great thing. In some ways it's a very tough thing because when you only have 25 percent, you wait for somebody else to make the big decisions. And sometimes we find ourselves looking around the room waiting for somebody to do that and nothing is happening. And we kind of realized that maybe somebody has to do something to take on a leadership role."
Fourplay's previous CD was 2005's X, at Number One on Billboard's Top Contemporary Jazz chart upon its release. The set included the single "My Love's Leaving'" featuring Michael McDonald.
