Smooth jazz sax player Euge Groove admits to being a techno-geek: he was among the first to distribute his music via MP3, and now with his current hit album Born 2 Groove, he's taken to recording in the new High-Definition technology (HD). But in an interview with JazzMonthly.com., Groove admits that, as cool as being on the cutting edge can be, HD hides nothing: "I think it's an absolutely beautiful sound...(but) it revealed a lot of things that you don't necessarily want revealed on a recording... For sax players, our thing is all about the reed, that little piece of wood that vibrates on the mouthpiece.. in the HD you can really hear the difference between a good and a not so good reed, so things like that would have me spending a little bit extra time and pulling out a few more hairs than normal."
The title track to Born 2 Groove is currently at Number Two on the smooth jazz chart.
Before becoming a smooth jazz sax star, Groove toured with Tina Turner, Huey Lewis & the News, Bonnie Raitt, and the Gap Band, and was a member of the Tower Of Power Horns. While he plays a number of different horns, he does have a preference in saxophones: "I think the tenor, from doing all the rock n' roll over the years. And you know, my heroes were King Curtis and Junior Walker and those guys, and they were all screaming, big, fat-sounding tenor players, you know, so I think I prefer that. The soprano takes me back to the classical side of it, because it's much sweeter and a much more controlled instrument. Alto I started on but, I don't know, I just kind of gravitated away from that, I think."
