Ed McMahon is spoofing his recent financial troubles and earning some money at the same time. According to Reuters, the 85-year-old former Tonight Show sidekick is portraying a rapper in a couple of new commercials for FreeCreditReport.com, a company that aims to help people avoid bad credit. McMahon appears dressed in baggy pants and flashing gold jewelry.
In the first video, titled "Big Check," McMahon and his bodyguard cruise through a neighborhood looking for past winners of the million-dollar sweepstakes McMahon once promoted to see if they will give him some of the money back. The second clip, "Ed McGangsta," it finds McMahon having undergone a financial rebirth because the company has helped him put his financial house in order. The two videos will debut online next month.
Saying he thought the concept of the ads was "brilliant," McMahon explained, "That's the appeal, that you're not alone, so why not spread that good word around?" McMahon said. "There is hope. There is help. There are situations that can be improved." McMahon recently faced foreclosure on his Beverly Hills mansion after defaulting on a $4.8 million mortgage. He blamed his finance woes on having suffered a broken neck 18 months earlier, leaving him unable to work. He subsequently sued the hospital where he was treated for the injury and the man at whose house the accident occurred. In late August, McMahon found a buyer for the home and avoided foreclosure.
