Diane Lane Oblivious To Drugs Early In Career

Diane Lane plays an alcoholic coke-head in Fierce People, a new "dramedy" about a mother and son who live on a wealthy man's estate one summer in the late 1970s. Drugs are main characters in the movie, as just about everyone in it is using and abusing in one form of another.

Lane was a teen actress during the period in which the movie is set, but she said she somehow avoided getting caught up in the free-wheeling drug scene of the time even though it was all around her: "I was pretty much surrounded, although I didn't know it at the time. And people would point it out to me later, like, 'You didn't see what was going on around you?' 'No, I had no idea.' Then other people I would see them, you know, taking drugs. It stands out in your mind because it's such a shocking new phenomenon. I mean, I could sort of understand a drunk person, 'Yeah, I'll try this drug' but I can't imagine a sober person saying yes to drugs."

Fierce People opens in limited release today (September 7th).
