Comic Dave Chappelle, who has returned to the stand-up arena after walking away from his popular cable sketch show two years ago, broke the endurance record for a standup routine December 2nd with a show at Hollywood's famed Laugh Factory.
The 34-year-old comedian topped his own record of six hours and seven minutes, set in mid-April, by telling jokes for a total of six hours and 12 minutes.
Laugh Factory owner Jamie Masada explained to AP, "Dave was determined to keep his record because he recently heard that Dane Cook was planning on trying to break (his) record."
Cook had previously been the title holder, putting in three hours and 50 minutes on stage in early April and breaking the record set in 1980 by Richard Pryor, at two hours and 41 minutes.
Chappelle spurred rumors about his mental health in 2005 when he abruptly walked away from a $50 million deal to continue his hit Chappelle's Show on Comedy Central and went to Africa. At the Laugh Factory, the comic told audience members he'd been traveling, most recently to Ecuador, Masada said.
