Chaka Khan says that there were days while recording Funk This! with producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis when they told her to turn around and go home. The veteran songstress laughs while recalling that their experience with vocalists told them when she was actually ready to give her best in the studio and when she was not.
Khan says she enjoyed her first experience working with Jam & Lewis: "We worked when we worked and there were sometimes went into the studio and I went there to sing and he says, 'You're not feeling it today.' He says, 'Go on home.' Terry would say, 'Go home.' (Laughs). So it was like that. It was really easy. So I really got a lot out of the experience. And meeting them and working with them was really a great thing."
Funk This! includes Khan's versions of songs by Joni Mitchell, Prince, Carly Simon, Jimi Hendrix, Dee Dee Warwick, and her first recording entity, Rufus.
Khan is charting at Urban AC radio with the sell-penned ballad "Angel," while smooth jazz is enjoying her duet of "You Belong To Me" with its co-writer, Michael McDonald.
