Chaka Khan Enjoying 'Color Purple' Experience

Chaka KhanR&B icon Chaka Khan, who earned two Grammy Awards at the night's ceremonies in Los Angeles, recently began her very first starring role on Broadway. Khan joined the cast of the long-running musical The Color Purple, portraying Sofia.

Khan had only limited experience performing in staged musicals and hadn't enjoyed it. She says she's surprised by how much she's enjoying being part of the popular theatrical.

She said: "Well, it's been brilliant, it's been interesting. What's interesting is that I really love it (laughs). I love doing it. I didn't think I would. I had some pretty iffy experiences when I did Mama I Want To Sing in the West End of London, and so I came into with, like, feeling like 'Oh God, Oh God.' But after I learned my parts and got it down, Sofia is now here. She's in here and it's fun. I love it."

Khan will continue in the role of Sofia in The Color Purple through February 24th, when the show ends its Broadway run.

The singer earned best R&B album with her 2007 release Funk This, while the track "Disrespectful" featuring Mary J. Blige was awarded best R&B performance by a duo or group at the Grammy Awards.
