Volleyball great Gabrielle Reece and her husband, surfer Laird Hamilton, welcomed a son on New Year's Day in Hawaii. Brody Jo Hamilton is the second child for the couple, who also have a daughter, 4-year-old Reece Viola.
In other baby news, Elizabeth Hasselbeck will return to The View on January 7th after two-and-a-half months of maternity leave. The 30-year-old co-host and her husband, Arizona Cardinals quarterback Tim Hasselbeck, welcomed son Taylor Thomas on November 9th. ABC announced that Hasselbeck's first day back will feature an hour-long "Hot Topics" episode with a surprise guest.
Sean Penn has been named head of the awards jury at the Cannes Film Festival this year. The actor/director said in a statement on January 3rd that "The Cannes Film Festival has long been the epicenter in the discovery of those new waves of filmmakers from all over the world. I very much look forward to participating in this year's festival as president of the jury." The festival is scheduled to run from May 14th to the 25th.
Jay Leno has been accused of violating strike rules by writing his own monologue in his first Tonight Show appearance since writers went on strike. "A discussion took place today between Jay Leno and the Writers Guild to clarify to him that writing for The Tonight Show constitutes a violation of the Guilds' strike rules," the Guild said in a statement Thursday. NBC claims that Leno is allowed to write his own material and the Writers Guild of America was wrong. "The WGA agreement permits Jay Leno to write his own monologue for The Tonight Show," NBC said in a statement. "The WGA is not permitted to implement rules that conflict with the terms of the collective bargaining agreement between the studios and the WGA."
Tila Tequila's romance with A Shot at Love winner Bobby Banhart has ended, so the MySpace sensation plans to look for love on a second season of her hit MTV show. Although Tila claimed her short-lived beau called it off because of her busy schedule, the 25-year-old says that the bisexual bachelorette never called him after the show ended. Nonetheless, Tequila announced during her MTV New Year's Eve party that she wants to "find love for real" on a new season of the show. The finale of A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila was MTV's most-watched broadcast since November 2005.
Taking a cue from Katie Holmes, rumored Scientologist Jennifer Lopez will reportedly give birth naturally and silently when she welcomes her baby later this year. The faith, of which Holmes and husband Tom Cruise are vocal supporters, preaches that loud hospital environments can have damaging effects on a newborn.
The Three Tenors will never re-form with a replacement for the late Luciano Pavarotti. Group member Joe Carreras told Australian newspapers that reestablishing the popular act would be disrespectful to their friend's memory. Pavarotti died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 71 last September.
The Law & Order franchise is planning a new spin-off in the UK, tentatively titled Law & Order: London. Series creator Dick Wolf is currently in negotiations with a British firm about the project, which would be the first locally produced version of the crime drama. Although Russia and France run independent versions of Law & Order: Criminal Intent, they are helmed by American production companies.
Philip Seymour Hoffman is reportedly the latest big name to sign on to Steven Spielberg's upcoming true crime film, The Trial of the Chicago Seven. Borat star Sasha Baron Cohen is widely believed to be starring and Vanity Fair is speculating that Will Smith, Taye Diggs, Adam Arkin and Kevin Spacey may also be attached to the project, based on headshots spied in Spielberg's file for the movie.
