Britney Spears has finally confirmed that has been reported everywhere -- she will open the MTV Video Music Awards this Sunday (September 9th) with a performance of her new songs "Gimme More" and "Cry," assisted by illusionist Criss Angel, according to Billboard.com.
Fans can then purchase ringtones for "Gimme More" exclusively through MTV Mobile -- which is simulcasting the VMAs -- for two days.
The appearance ends weeks of speculation, and stands to be the pop queen's comeback performance after a difficult year marked by divorce, child custody problems, substance abuse, and what has been described as a nervous breakdown. Although "Gimme More" (whose opening line repeats the words "It's Britney, bitch") has had less than a week of airplay, it debuts today at Number 55 on the Billboard Pop 100 chart.
Spear's next album, which is still untitled, will be in stores on November 13th.
