Brian Culbertson Says 'Bringing Back The Funk' A Matter Of Timing

Brian CulbertsonKeyboard and trombone whiz Brian Culbertson says he's always loved funk music and had always wanted to make a funk record, but he had to wait until the timing was right. After the huge success of his album It's On Tonight, he felt he had the right stuff to move forward with the idea, which has resulted in the all-star set Bringing Back The Funk.

Culbertson explained: "This project had been marinating for many years and finally just this past year I really sat down and said, OK! I think it's time to do it. I mean, it was all about the timing."

Things came together after Culbertson jumped on stage at a Prince show in Vegas, then met bassist Larry Graham, who appears on the album.

Culbertson then called on a who's who of musical alumnae from great funk bands including Parliament/Funkadelic, Sly & the Family Stone, James Brown's J.B.'s and Earth, Wind & Fire to help him make the album.

The current single from the set is "Always Remember," which is climbing the smooth jazz charts. Another track, "Funkin' For My Father," has been picked up by some urban adult stations.
