Brian Culbertson has a Number One smooth jazz single with his tune "Always Remember" from his all-star CD Bringin' Back The Funk. In addition to playing keyboards on the set, Culbertson also performs solos and joins the horn section on his trusty trombone.
Culbertson managed to bring together veteran musicians from Earth, Wind & Fire, Sly & the Family Stone, James Brown and other special guests for his collection of funk jams, which is executive produced by EWF's Maurice White.
Asked about the title, Culbertson says that the funk genre does need a shot in the arm: "One interviewer said, 'How can you bring back the funk? The funk never left!' I'm like, well, I disagree, because I think the spirit of that music kinda has left in terms of getting the band together and cutting it live, everyone's excitement toward the music, just going for it. No one that I know of is doing that today."
Culbertson's next gig will be July 20th at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, California.
