The always elegant, Grammy-award winning renowned musician, Boz Scaggs is making a significant leap from his first collection of standards, with the strong sensual edge that appears on his upcoming release, ‘Speak Low.’
Set for release on October 28th the album is being retro-fit in a style reminiscent of the relatively recent, yet postmodern past; it will first be released on vinyl. The vinyl version of the album will be available today, September 30th and all other formats will hit stores on October 28th.
The release of this album comes five years after Scaggs’ first volume of standards, ‘But Beautiful,’ debuted at #1 on the Billboard jazz chart. Scaggs will give fans the chance to experience the intimacy of this album live, as he embarks on a nationwide tour this fall.
‘Speak Low’ was co-produced with Grammy award-winning producer/arranger Gil Goldstein. Scaggs started working on Speak Low several years ago, but was not sure if he’d ever fully realize the sound that he’d imagined.
And then he experienced what he describes as a remarkable coincidence. “It was raining, cold out. I walked by the Blue Note and heard music coming out of the club. It was vibes, string trio, a couple of horns – this was the sound I’d been hearing in my head, exactly. Turned out to be Gil Goldstein and a nonet. After the set Gil and I started talking, and it was just a really nice meeting. When we got together around a piano, that was it. We knew.”
Scaggs began his career as a teenager and over a dozen records later, when Scaggs released ‘But Beautiful,’ the response from fans and critics alike was remarkable and the album debuted at #1 on the Billboard Jazz charts.
The Boston Globe hailed that Scaggs had “made one of the year’s best albums of jazz vocals,” while Jazz Times noted that the release marked “an enticing new chapter in an already dynamic career.”
Scaggs once told the LA Times, “I’m going to be around this music for awhile. I love its melodic and harmonic qualities, and it’s going to impact what I sing and what I write. The door’s been opened.”
