Boney James is known for his sultry contemporary R&B sounds. But on his new hit album Shine, the saxophonist also stretched out on a bossa nova classic, "Aguas De Marco" by revered Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim.
James says he has always wanted to record some of Jobim's tunes, and "Aguas De Marco" -- also known as "Waters Of March" -- was one of the first he arranged and recorded for the new set, even if he has trouble pronouncing the title. He said: "'Aguas De Marco, I guess. My Portuguese accent is not so good. Yeah, that's a Jobim tune, it's always been one of my favorite songs. It was also just on my list of things I wanted to try when I first started the record. I wondered how it would turn out if I could do a duet with myself and make it work, because it's traditionally a male-female vocal duet."
Meanwhile, James' leadoff single from the set, "The Total Experience" featuring George Duke, has spent three weeks at Number One on the national smooth jazz airplay chart. |
