Andy Summers says that the current Police reunion feels like an entirely new band. Summers, who has dates booked with Sting and Stewart Copeland into next year, said that he balks at calling the tour a "reunion," explaining to The Canadian Press that, "It just sounds non-creative to me... In a sense, it feels more like a new band. It doesn't feel like some old band and we're just going to kind of try to remember the way the old songs went and do them just like that. That wasn't the spirit that made the Police what it was."
Summers says that no definitive decision about the band heading into the studio to record a new album has been reached, admitting that, "That's a long-shot, that's way off yet. We just right now want to get through this tour and make it very successful, run out of the whole thing and then see what happens."
When asked about the chemistry between the band members who have a long history of butting heads over "artistic differences," Summers explained that, "It is what makes the band, it's a sort of volatile chemistry... which is, I think, very characteristic of the better groups. It's got to be there, you can't have three mellow guys, what would we play? You wouldn't have this kind of music."
The Police perform tonight (Thursday, July 26th) in Montreal at the Bell Centre.
