Alicia Keys is building up her screen resume in addition to racking up hits from her new CD As I Am. The Grammy-nominated singer is reportedly going to portray screen legend Lena Horne in a new biopic to be produced by Oprah Winfrey.
The New York Post is reporting that Winfrey's production company acquired the project and cast Keys in the lead. "We're going to start filming next year, and we've got Alicia," Winfrey told the paper's "Page Six" column during an interview for The Great Debaters, which she produced.
The news likely comes as a blow to Janet Jackson, who has long expressed interest in playing Horne, who broke barriers as one of the first African American females to appear in Hollywood films. Jackson was the main contender for the role when the project was set up as a TV movie at ABC, according to EURweb.com.
Keys currently tops several singles charts with her Grammy-nominated song "No One."
