Actor Paul Newman died on September 26th after a long battle with cancer. He was 83. According to his publicist, Newman was at his Connecticut farmhouse surrounded by family and close friends when he passed away. Robert Forrester, vice-chairman of the Newman's Own Foundation. said in a statement Saturday, "Paul Newman's craft was acting. His passion was racing. His love was his family and friends. And his heart and soul were dedicated to helping make the world a better place for all."
Born on January 26, 1925, Newman was an Academy-Award winning true movie star best known for his roles in such films as Hud and Cool Hand Luke. He began his career on the stage and then moved on to television in the 1950s. His first movie role was The Silver Chalice in 1954. That appearance was followed by a string of notable roles including the boxer Rocky Graziano in Somebody Up There Likes Me and the troubled young husband Brick in Cat On a Hot Tin Roof. During his long film career he received 10 Oscar nominations, winning one regular award for The Color Of Money and two honorary ones. He was married to fellow Oscar winner, Joanne Woodward, for 50 years. Newman had three children from a previous marriage as well as three from his marriage to Woodward. Newman was a social activist and was among Hollywood's most vocal supporters of the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Newman was also a noted philanthropist who donated hundreds of millions of dollars through his foundation, which was funded by the profits from his food company, Newman's Own.
Newman once said that there's no way to predict what performance would turn out to be an award-winner: "There's so many things that go into making a film. There's so many ingredients that go into making a performance. It's pretty hard to tell which performer performed the best. Somebody may have started out with a piece of junk and brought it up to past mediocrity so that it was pretty damn good."
The following bite is from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid:
Butch recommends he and The Kid go to Bolivia: (Robert Redford) "What's your idea this time?" (Paul Newman) "Bolivia." (Redford) "What's Bolivia?" (Newman) "Bolivia. That's a country, stupid. Central or South America, one or the other. " (Redford) "Why don't we just go to Mexico instead?" (Newman) "All they've got in Mexico is sweat. There's too much of that here. Look, if we'd been in business during the California gold rush, where would we have gone? California, right?" (Redford) "Right." (Newman) "So when I say Bolivia, you just think 'California.' You wouldn't believe what they're finding in the ground down there. They're just falling onto it. Silver mines, gold mines, tin mines. Payrolls so heavy we'd strain ourselves stealing them." (Redford) "You just keep thinking, Butch, that's what you're good at." (Newman) "Boy, I got vision and the rest of the world wears bifocals."
The following bite is from The Color of Money:
FINAL SCENE: (Tom Cruise) "What you going to do when I kick your a**?" (Paul Newman) "Pick myself up and let you kick me again." (Cruise) "Oh yeah?" (Newman) "Yeah. Just don't put the money in the bank, kid. 'Cause if I don't whip you now, I'm gonna whip you next month in Dallas." (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) "In Houston. There's nothing coming up in Dallas." (Newman) "Houston, Dallas. And if not then, then the month after that in New Orleans." (Cruise) "Oh yeah? What makes you so sure?" (Newman) "Hey. I'm back!" (billiards break sfx) )
The following bites are from Cat On A Hot Tin Roof:
One of Brick's bratty little nieces finds him lying on the floor as Maggie looks on: (Little Girl): "Why's Uncle Brick on the floor?" (Brick): "I tried to kill your Aunt Maggie. But I failed. And I fell. Little girl would you hand me my cane."
Brick confronts Big Daddy in the basement surrounded by all the antiques Big Momma has collected: "Look at me. You put it very well indeed. I'm a 30-year-old kid and pretty soon I'm going to be a 50-year-old kid. I don't know what to believe in. What's the good of living you've got nothing to believe.. there's got to be some purpose in life, some meaning. Look at me, for the sake of God. Look at me before it's too late. For once in your life look at me as I really am. Look at me!"
The following bite is from Cool Hand Luke:
In the film's final scene, Luke yells out the window as he's about to be captured: "What we have here is a failure to communicate."
