2007 Video Music Awards: Performances Plus Offstage Drama

The 2007 MTV Video Music Awards, held last night (September 9th) at the Palms Caesar Resort in Las Vegas, were a much smaller event than previous years in terms of the size of the venue, but they were one of the busiest ever. The show included performers appearing on a main stage, and also rushing between performances at parties taking place in suites and clubs throughout the hotel.

The most talked-about moments were not seen on camera, however.

At one point, Kid Rock reportedly walked up to Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, who was sitting near Diddy, and after an exchange of words and Lee standing up, punched him. One witness said that Lee instigated the argument, even though Rock was only one whose punches landed. Lee was ejected by security guards, but Rock was allowed to stay.

Both men have been married to, and divorced from, Pamela Anderson.

Jamie Foxx and Diddy both made fun of this during the show. Anderson herself appeared and introduced Kanye West, but didn't comment on the fight

After Kanye West lost in all his nominated categories, he reportedly threw a tantrum backstage, saying, "That's two years in a row, man... give a black man a chance... I'm trying hard man, I have the... number one record, man." He also said he would not return to MTV.

Last year, West crashed the stage in a drunken state at the MTV Europe Awards, after not winning for best video.

Britney Spears' much-heralded opening performance was lackluster and disappointing. It featured Britney opening with the Elvis Presley line from his hit "Trouble": "If you're looking for trouble, you've come to the right place." She then lip-synched her way through "Gimme More," wearing boots and a bikini, and surrounded by backup dancers who were much more energetic, and better-rehearsed, than she was.

The two-hour show was severely shorter than previous years, and featured 11 awards compared to last year's 23, and only gave out eight awards on camera.

Sarah Silverman's deadpan opening monologue was short and included jokes about Britney, her children, and her shaved privates.

There were four "suite parties, where many of the night's performances were taking place:
- The Good Life Party," with Kanye West.
- The Southern Hospitality Party, with Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, 50 Cent, and others.
- The Friends and Enemies party, with Fall Out Boy and guests.
- "Hotel Party #3562" with the Foo Fighters, and guests Serj Tankian of System of a Down, Queens of the Stone Age, Lemmy from Motorhead, Cee Lo, and Eagles of Death Metal.

Justin Timberlake, who won two awards, told the audience during both acceptance speeches to pressure MTV to play more videos.

Kanye West and 50 Cent shared the stage to announce "Most Earthshattering Collaboration." In a bit that looked well-rehearsed, they made a point not to look at each other while giving the award.

Chris Brown's performance included a show-stopping dance section during which he did some Michael Jackson moves to "Billie Jean," as well as a guest appearance by Rihanna.

Shia LaBeouf appeared and announced the title of the new Indiana Jones film: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Miss South Carolina Teen USA Caitlin Upton made a speech at the end of the show in the style of her famous pageant flub.

Presenters included Nicole Scherzinger, Eve, Robin Thicke, Jennifer Hudson, 50 Cent, Kanye West, Rosario Dawson, Pamela Anderson, Adrian Grenier and Kevin Connolley of Entourage, Nelly, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Mary J Blige, Dr Dre, Diddy, and the cast of The Hills.
