A sequel to the Will Smith blockbuster, I Am Legend, could be in the works. An inside source tells ShockTillYouDrop.com that Richard Matheson, the author of the original novel from which the film was based, has signed off on the rights for a possible follow-up. Nothing is set just yet, though. The reported move gives Warner Bros. the option to do a sequel. A second film could make sense. I Am Legend debuted with $76.5 million, the biggest December opening ever.
The film has been a hit with both critics and audience members. Smith says he thinks he knows part of the reason: "Just the level of care and concern that was taken to the character and to the idea and to really search for the reality of the situation. It was scary and it was so beautiful. And there were so many different genres inside of it. It was a horror movie. A science fiction. You know, a wonderful art character piece. It just had so many different elements to it."
Smith tells us he thinks that I Am Legend is a different kind of sci-fi movie: "You generally don't see science fiction movies with this level of care. Right, it's usually -- it's a science fiction movie. You put the stuff in there. It's cool. You add some cool special effects and you move on."
Since its release on December 14, 2007, I Am Legend has grossed over $335 million worldwide.
