'Atonement' Receives Key Golden Globe Nominations

The period piece, Atonement, received several Golden Globe nominations on December 13th; among them Best Drama Picture, Best Actress for Keira Knightley, and Best Actor for James McAvoy. One of the movie's most remarkable scenes is a six-minute shot which involved more than 1,800 cast members, extras, and crewmembers. McAvoy told us that one scene represents to him the heights which filmmaking can reach: "I see it as a microcosm of what filmmaking is. It's a miracle of collaboration and it can fall apart at any stage due to any one member of the collaborative experience. And in this part of the collaborative experience we had 1,800 people involved and any one of them could have screwed it up. And the fact that we did one take where nobody screwed up is a miracle, man."

McAvoy told us they filmed that elaborate scene three-and-a-half times.

Atonement is based on the best-selling novel by Ian McEwan and tells the saga of one woman's lifelong struggle to atone for something she did as a teenager.
